21-Year-Old Says “I Wasn’t Groomed to Be an Entrepreneur”

September 2, 2016kaylaroxasGet Inspired1 comment

Welcome to Feature Friday where we share an inspiring story of a young woman entrepreneur. This week we are featuring Hadiza Kassim, a 21-year old who says she views her age as an asset rather than a hindrance. Check out more of her story below.

(PS. Do you want to be featured next? Find out how at the bottom of this post!)

1. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I can’t point to one particular thing that inspired me to start. I come from a medical background, with both of my parents being healthcare professionals and I myself pursuing a degree in occupational therapy so I wasn’t groomed to be an entrepreneur, but the idea was one that came to me and that I decided to go for — and I’m glad that I did. In retrospect, I am able to see how I was always destined to be an entrepreneur. My knack for creativity and flair for ingenuity wouldn’t fair far in a typical 9-5 setting.

2. What entrepreneur do you look up to most and why?

I look up to many entrepreneurs — mainly women given the nature of my work. Kristi Jackson of Women CEO Project is definitely one. Her poise, professionalism, and knowledge is definitely something to be noted. I also admire Chen Burkett NY. Her classy pieces are always a joy to see.

3. What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur?

The balance between being a typical 21-year old and a business woman has been quite challenging. I’ve made so many sacrifices for my business, none of which I regret, but it is challenging. I’m in a field with people who are much older than I am and who have access to resources I don’t necessarily have access to, but I don’t allow my age to be a hindrance. In fact, I find it to be an asset. The amazement I see on a person’s face when they learn that I am only 21 is something that always makes me feel proud.

4. What advice would you give to a woman looking to start or grow her own business?

It sounds cliche, but I would say just start – have a plan for sure, but just go for it. We always hear that the best time to start a business is when “you’re ready,” but in all honesty, if you wait until you are ready, you will never be ready.

5. What do you do and where can people find you?

Shop Sarauniya is an Ankara print fashion label for women, men, and children. Check out our Instagram account at @officialsarauniya.
