Welcome to Feature Friday, where every week we feature an inspiring woman entrepreneur!
This week we are featuring Liza Altenberg of Polka Dot Growth. She is one of the newest members of the Young Women Entrepreneurs Club. Her journey started off in the corporate world before going out and making it on her own as an entrepreneur.
Here’s what we asked Liza about her entrepreneurial journey:
1. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Having worked in direct sales and network marketing for my entire adult life, I’ve always “worked” as though I was an entrepreneur… I finally decided that instead of lining a large corporation’s pocket by teaching and inspiring, I was going to put my own teachings to practice and claim the freedom that comes with business ownership.
2. What entrepreneur do you look up to most that inspires you and why?
I look to Malala Yousafzai for inspiration. She didn’t go into business to make money – her motivation is in creating a better world for the future. She’s working to create freedoms for women who wouldn’t have otherwise been able to experience it. She leads through service, and this is a huge part of who I am and what I do.
3. What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur?
In the world of direct selling and network marketing, there is a template, a step-by-step guide to starting from 0 and going to 100. I know that world, it’s my safe place. The world that I’m living in now as I build a business from scratch – even though it supports the world that I’m comfortable in – is very different. There’s no user’s manual – I have to write it on my own. There are very few similarities between the two worlds, and each day I find a new obstacle to overcome. It’s challenging, but also exciting to embrace that freedom!
4. What’s the biggest piece of advice would you give to women who are looking to start or grow their own business?
You have to start with your passion. Don’t go into a business simply because you see money there. If all you’re working for is money, that’s all you’ll ever get! What is your passion? Build your business around that, and you’ll be paid in so much more than money.
5. Share your business with us. What do you do and where can people find you to connect?
